At the same time the Omega class Corvettes were being designed for planetary assaults, Starfleet began to study the idea of beefing up the new runabout class of small craft to support those assaults. The first prototype was constructed in 2368, just as the first Danube class runabout began flight trials. The Evaders began entering the fleet in operational numbers as the buildup to the Dominion War began in the early 2370s and about 350 have been built, although 67 have been lost in combat.

These assault shuttles can operate independently in either space-to-space action or space-to-ground assaults. The phaser array/sensor pallet, similar to the much larger one on the Nebula Class Cruisers, mounted to the top of the runabout gives the small ship a hefty punch, letting it go toe to toe with Jem’Hadar fighters, but it also lets the ship see much further and jam sensor systems to help it sneak into enemy strongholds.

The Omega class carries two of these craft, giving it built-in combat support and the ability to project small units onto planets without having to take the whole ship into an atmosphere.

The assault shuttle carries a crew of six: mission commander, helmsman, two tactical officers, engineer, and operations officer. The small craft can also carry 25 soldiers, with dormitory style bunks in the main hold allowing them to be carried on the maximum 25-day duration trip.

* The ship shown in these pictures is actually the Prevaricate class, which is the creation of David Highlander and can be found at Paul Cargile's Starfleet Military Reserves. I did not want to change his ship, so I used Andrew Hodges' images of this ship and created new specs.
